Frosty the Snowman is one of the most beloved symbols of Christmas, and one of Santa’s closest friends! Since the day he first came to life, Frosty the Snowman has been celebrated in many ways across the world.

Today, Frosty is not only the most magical Snowman to have ever lived, but is also an iconic holiday figure. Even though Frosty is beloved by kids all over the world, he doesn’t necessarily look like the average snowman, does he?

What Is Frosty The Snowman’s Nose Made Out Of?

Unlike most snowmen that have a carrot for a nose, Frosty has a button nose. He also has two eyes made out of coal, smokes a corncob pipe and comes to life whenever he is wearing his magical tophat.

What Is a Snowman?

Snowmen have been a popular winter tradition for hundreds of years, so there’s no “right” way to build a snowman. Usually, a snowman is made by using three large balls of snow, with the largest at the bottom and the smallest on top. Most of them will feature rocks for mouth and eyes, stick arms, and a carrot for a nose. Some kids will then add hats and scarves to give their snowman some style.

Why Do People Build Snowmen?

No one knows exactly why people build snowmen, but one of the earliest records of a snowman is found in a book from all the way back in 1380. As time went by, snowmen became more popular and were seen as a figure for celebrations.

Fun Facts about Snowmen

People all over the world build snowmen in a number of different ways. For example, the people of Zurich have a special festival every year where they display a cotton snowman called Böögg (which means BoogeyMan!) on the streets of the town. As they do this, they toss bread and sausages to the crowd that comes out to witness the festivities and cheer. Afterward, the snowman is placed on a pile of wood which is then set on fire. When the flames get to Böögg, he explodes because he is stuffed with dynamite! This is usually done as a signal of the official end of winter.

The largest snowman in history was 122 feet tall. It was created in Maine in 2008 in honor of Maine Senator Olympia Snowe. On the other hand, the world's smallest snow-woman was built by Doug McManaman in Scotia, Canada in 2012. The snowman was just over an inch tall.

Karen Schmidt, who put together a total of 5,127 snowmen in 2013, holds the record for the highest number of snowmen ever built by a single person.
